Hi all,
Lets start with general question .. ok so if you were to glue and screw additional timber along the length of a timber in its vertical plane would it strengthen it ? Ie acting a bit like a simple laminated beam.

Yes it would but not necessarily enough to make any real difference unless the ends of it were "let in" or sat on the end supports.

The usual way of splicing timbers togther is to bolt them and this is what must be done with rafters.....BUT if you are planning to use the roof for anything which could be deemed to be "livable" you need to seek building regulation approval during which you willbe asked to prove that your alterations are strong enough to be safe for anyone living in, or entering your home

all depends really if you had a length of 100x50mm and added another by gllueing and screwing you will still have bounce think in terms of a scaffold board bounces but won't inn the 10" depth you can place as many 100x50mm lengths as you want side by side they will bounce
