Extending Newel Post Back to full Height After Being cut off?

by gavski » Wed Jan 21, 2015 3:43 pm

I have a newel post that has been partially cut off and I want to extend it back to full length. it is 70mm sq so I can't get an extension with a spigot but I can get a full newel, so I'm going to cut that and joint the two.

The question is the best way to join them (minimal woodwork).

Anyone know if a handrail bolt would be ok? or other

thanks

Usually we make sure the topof the old is cut off absolutely sqaure and then mark a line from diagonal corner to diagonal corner giving us the absolute centre of the newel.

The drill a 25mm hole 75mm (or so) deep straight down into the post.

Do the same with the new post.

Glue a 150mm dowell into the hole in the existing post and apply adhesive to the face of it. Do the same to the new post, applying adhesve into the receiving hole.

Fit both together.

Good luck and do let us know how you get on,with a photo if possible. There are bound to be others with exactly the same problem.
