6x6 as Ridgeboard for Shed Construction With Pitched Roof?

by kragen2179 » Sun May 03, 2015 5:52 pm

So I am building a shed 16'x12' with a 12/12 pitch roof.

I intend to use 2x6 for the rafters, but am curious about the ridge board, most sites I have found suggest to use 2x6 also. Although I would be inclined to use 2x8 so that the entire face of the rafters end is touching.

HOWEVER since I am going for a 12/12 pitch, the apex of the roof will have a 90° angle. If I use a 6x6 beam instead of a board, I would not have to cut the ends of the rafters to match the 45° angle required to fit the rafters.

Is this a viable alternative or should I stick with using a board?

What would the reasons for not doing it be?

make your own trusses where the cut joists meet use 25mm ply cleats either side of the joists . you can also fit in some tie beams at ceiling height this will stop roof spread insert extra ties at mid span to prevent sagging
