Hi, newbie looking for advice please!
We've removed a false wall with a damp issue and no ventilation. We thought there would be a fireplace behind it.
There's a sandstone lintel, below which there's a mix of bricks (house was built in 1912) and then the fireplace itself appears to have had cement poured into it! There's a rusted but fairly solid metal along the top of the cement. We can't tell how deep the cement is, it's also very neatly squared off as if a frame had been put round to pour the cement in?
Can anyone tell me what the purpose of this would be? If it's structural we would leave it well alone but it would be nice to take it out and tidy it all up.
Our intention had been to expose the lintel and install shelves above, we've no intention of ever trying to use the fire.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
