Poured concrete under floorboards - is this normal? Help, advice, information, answers and tips on all types of flooring from laminate and carpet to timber and vinyl

Hi,

I'm preparing to renovate my 1930s first floor flat. I was intending to relocate my pipes which currently run along the walls, to under the floorboards. I have lifted my hallway floorboards to find that an inch or two under the floorboards is solid concrete. Baring in mind this is a first floor flat, I would have thought that concrete was too heavy. Does anyone have experience of this and know whether it is normal practice to have concrete under floorboards in a flat?

Hi smorzel,
No it’s not normal but in instances where ceilings are lathe and plaster I have seen it used to stabilise the mortar squirts through the lathes.
