Privacy fence extension to existing Arris fence

by nitramA1 » Sat Apr 17, 2021 12:31 pm

I want to extend the height of my existing Arris fence by approx 30cm. Ideally I would have preferred to us some standard fence panels and post extensions, but the current fence posts are some 2.98 to 2.5 metres apart.

To get the extra height I was thinking of fixing 75x75 posts to the existing 120x100 posts (I’d run them up the side of these posts to give sufficient support) and then running battens between the posts.

I wonder if someone would confirm that this would be OK and also a suggestion on batten sizes. I was thinking of around 40mm x 15mm battens with a 15mm gap between each run.

I’d appreciate any guidance.

Hi nitrama1
A lot depends on how high the existing fence is - if it’s already 1.8m you are already at the max permitted height next to a highway. If this is not an issue adding 0.3m on top of a 1.8m fence will increase wind resistance unless you make you horizontals further apart.

Thanks for the response.
The 1.8m rule shouldn’t apply as its not next to a highway.
Also my neighbour has already gone above 1.8m with their own privacy fence so that shouldn’t be a problem.

I’m going to concrete additional posts mid way between the existing posts to provide support with four runs of 50mm x 25mm battens with a 2cm gap. Hopefully that’ll withstand any wind.
