Re-Apply Bitumen paint over previously applied Bitumen paint

by intarsia » Thu Jun 04, 2020 1:37 pm

Hello -

A couple of years ago I undertook repair to a large felt roof at my house as it was cracking in places but not leaking. I applied two coats of Bitumen primer and then one coat of Bitumen paint with a second coat on joins and high water areas such as under the guttering etc. I used an entire 25 litres of the bitumen paint which gives you an idea of the roof space.

As the weather has improved I wanted to re-apply the bitumen paint to keep it performing well.

Questions:
Is it possible to re-apply bitumen paint over older bitumen paint?
Would I need to re-apply the primer or anything?

Thank you in advance for your support.

Hi intarsia,
If your bitumen paint is solvent based you will probably be ok with a clean with a stiff brush only. If it is waterbased you will probably need to use a primer.
Have a look at the instructions on the tin.

Hello -

Thank you for the response, I've checked with the manufacturer and they've confirmed it's solvent-based. I will take your advice and re-apply in parts where required. Thankfully there's minimal moss build-up and I've maintained the roof periodically by gently brushing it clean.

Hopefully this will continue to prolong the life of the roof.

Thank you.
