Re-point roof ridge top tiles? what mixture to use

Post by Skids » Fri May 02, 2008 1:49 pm

Hi,

I need to re-point my roof ridge top tiles and need to know what to use as a fitting cement.

Is it just a normal sand & cement 4:1 mix, or is there a special product that I should be using. In the new houses around the village they have what looks like a smooth dark mixture.

Thanks.

S,

THE SMOOTH DARK MIXTURE YOU REFER TO IS PROBABLY JUST DYED MORTAR.

THE MORTAR MIX USED DEPENDS ON THE TYPE OF TILES ON THE ROOF.

BUT IN GENERAL TERMS;
5:1 SOFTER/MOULDED TILES.
4:1 CONCRETE/CAST TILES.
3:1 CLAY/FROSTPROOF.

ONE PIECE OF ADDITIONAL ADVICE IS TO REMOVE, RE-BED AND POINT UP THE RIDGE TILES AS RE-POINTING ALONE IS AT BEST A TEMPORARY FIX AND AT WORST A WASTE OF TIME,ENERGY AND MONEY AS WEATHERING WILL RESULT IN THE ADDITIONAL MORTAR BECOMING DETATCHED FROM THE ORIGINAL.

ALDA.
