Reconstructing a wood floor

by ghpriestly » Sun Dec 30, 2007 5:56 pm

I have an old house (approx 200-300 years old) .It has one room (approx size 16' x16') which has a solid floor . The floor consists of thick tiles literally laid upon a bed of sand and gravel which then lays on earth. My questions are
1. Should I excavate the sand/soil to accommodate a sleeper wall, or perhaps a series of small brick piers ?
2. If so how deep would i need to go to ensure a good air flow under the floor
3. Lastly , would I need to leave a clear air flow underneath the reconstructed floor or could I introduct some form of insulation to reduce heat loss
Any advice would be appreciated
Regards

George
