removing old downpipe

hi,i need to remove the old steel downpipe,i have been told these are fixed to the wall by large nails into wooden dowels,can anyone tell me the best way to remove these fitments has i need to replace the old downpipe with a new pvc one,thanks

down pipes

You can if these are cast iron and you dont need to keep hit with hammer at each collar not to hard and this will crack at this point. you can then remove down pipe and then gently hit from side to side at the remaining fixings, this can be a more gentle way of removing than a crow bar. I have removed thousands this way.
