I'm refurbishing a bedroom in a 1930's house. At the moment there's a stud partition wall under the pitched roof at one end of the bedroom.
This was creating a small "room" under the eaves for the boiler which has now been removed. I'd like to take the wall out to make the bedroom a little bigger.
The wall looks like it was added after the house was built. The top beam is nailed to the rafters through old wallpapered plasterboard. The side studs (against the brick walls) were cut to go around skirting boards at the bottom, and one of them is completely cut in the middle to allow for some pipes to pass through. Surely this partition wall can't be needed to support the roof?
Once taken out, the rafter span between purlins looks like it will be rather long, but surely if it was a load bearing wall it wouldn't have been put in after the skirting boards and wallpaper?
Any advice appreciated, including what sort of professional would be best to consult on the roof structure -rafter spans etc.
