A few ways around this one, yes you can fill it and place fixing while filler still wet. Depends on filler and what's going to carry how successfull this method is. I always found wood filler best. You could also consider making hole bigger putting a noggin in to wall and screwing that up, then plaster patch and use the wood to fix to. As far pro or DIY job again depends how good at it you are, but not that difficult.
