Replacing a solid floor with a suspended one

by Cheryl Morris » Wed Jan 14, 2009 5:31 pm

We have a farmhouse in France built of stone (walls 2 feet thick) on very heavy clay soil.
If we dig out the old floors (tiles on earth) to a depth of 550mm and replace with wooden suspended flooring, is it likely to damage the structure of the house? I am concerned about everything drying out too much and undermining the structure. So far we have almost completed one room with 2 airbricks to the outside and there will be air vents to the communicating rooms.
Your advice will be greatly appreciated. This is a massive project and we would like to get it right without the house falling down!!

Cheryl Morris,
If in digging out for the suspended floor you expose the bottom of the walls I would think you may be creating problems. Many really old properties were built without any foundations and I would suggest you find a specialist in France who is experienced in dealing with these properties.
