Sagging Rafters

by hels1976 » Wed Jun 27, 2007 5:25 pm

I have just had a survey carried out on a property I intend to purchase and have been told that even though the roof was replaced 6 years ago the rafters are not properly supported and are sagging, if they are not looked at now then it will continue to worsen. He also mentioned purlins - what does this mean and what will it costs us? Should we be worried?

Purlins

A 'Purlin' runs horizontally through the centre of a common raftered roof to give added strength to a relatively long span of timber, a lightweight roof may not have needed one.

Your roof was probably initially laid with moderately light slates, the new roof is likely to have been re-done with something heavier in comparison.

If access is possible the job of shoring it up should be fairly simple, and quite necessary.
