Re: Weep holes in upvc doors: Discontinuous?

Hi Stoney, that is exactly right. I will try drilling through and see if that encourages better drainage. Thanks!

Re: Replacing Trickle Vents With Acoustic Trickle Vents

Gaz, The answer to Q1 depends on what the noise is that you are experiencing. You say you want to improve the sound insulation of the facade, are you sure that the trickle vent is the primary issue? Trickle vents are generally small and therefore the majority of the noise that can come through is hi...

Weep holes in upvc doors: Discontinuous?

Hi all, The bottom rail of my UPVC doors has filled up with water and leaked inwards with the wind and rain we've had of late. There are two small holes in the inner cill, and two larger holes in the outside of the frame. The outer holes are about 15mm lower and 30mm horizontally offset from the inn...

Cowboy tiling (funny)

We moved into this house 2 years ago. The previous landlords had a go at a number of DIY tasks, many of them involving selotape! My favourite, though, is the tiling in the kitchen. Aside from the obvious issues, the absolute best bit is the tiling around the shelf. I have tried to imagine, over the ...

Re: Outdoor Sound proofing wall material choice

Hi Hazeyjane, A couple of questions for you: What is the issue you are trying to solve? What separates you from your neighbours now? You will get different results from an acoustically absorptive barrier and just a dense barrier of decent height. In terms of the products you talk about, neither soun...

Re: Attic extension brick and block redo advice

Hi dnjohnston, You are never going to end up with a perfect wall so suggest you scrape back excess mortar to a reasonably flat surface and fill any major hollows with a mortar mix. Don't forget to wet the hollows before you fill them - a small pump up garden sprayer is ideal for this. Regards S Tha...

Re: Sound Proofing Effects of Sofa/Shelves Against wall

You will get a very minor improvement from the soft furnishings basically "absorbing" a bit of the sound energy which comes through the wall. This is unlikely to be more than 1-2dB and would make no difference if you were actually sitting on the sofa. If you covered the whole wall with lar...

Re: Flanking Noise From Neighbours Heard Through Whole House

Hi chx This sounds annoying! When we talk about flanking noise we mean specifically noise getting to you via any route other than straight through the separating wall. It sounds like you think the problem could be the coming straight through as well? These things are incredibly difficult to diagnose...

Re: Acoustic and Thermal Insulation/Soundproofing a Stone Shed

Hi there There is SO much information out there about this it is hard to know where to begin for anyone dipping their toe! Of course there are as many different solutions as there are rooms so here are some over-arching principles: Noise coming in: For most noise (mid-high freq) you need to concentr...

Re: Noise Impact Assessment for Replacing Windows in Flat

Although I am too late to help you HBass this might be useful if anyone else has the same query. I would also be interested to know what happened in your case. This is ultimately down to individual Local Authorities. If they dig their heels in they can ask for what they want, but presumably the dwel...

Re: Part E Clarification Particularly Part E2

I'm too late to be of help to you EDog, but in case anyone else ever looks this up: It absolutely applies between bedrooms. That's kind of the most important one! The only reason it wouldn't apply would be because there was an interconnecting door between the two bedrooms, which would be weird but n...

Attic extension brick and block redo advice

Hi all, Another Covid have-a-go hero here, new to the forum. Hoping i can be of some use in the acoustics & sound department, but today i'm coming to you for advice on brick and block. The situation: The previous landlords built a room in the roof. The walls are 1 party wall (brickwork) and 1 ex...
