cement should be sufficient all the way around the outside of the marble and the inside of the fire opening between the wall and the marble.

sounds to me like the motorised valve is faulty. take off the motor and give the spindle a few turns

try turning off the radiators that are hot see if the heat gets to the ones that are cold could just need balancing.

yes aslong as you seal it up at the bottom with heat resistant material. or u could have the flexible flue liner taken out and a chimney pot put on which would cost a bit extra

i would go for a baxi there reliable in my experience of them and if they do brake down parts are widely available and cheap. if u opt for a combi all the tanks and pump etc will be removed

unscrew the pump cap and give the pump a turn or two. maybe air loci in pump causing boiler to shut down

zac try turning off a cuple of the rads that get warm like the one in the room above and room next to and see if it gets warm your system may just require balancing. iif it gets warm gradually turn the ones u turned off back on. or if you av thermostatic rad valve on it, it maybe faulty

sounds like the pump and the heat is back feeding thats why upstairs is only gettin warm. how long does your boiler light up for when the heating is turned on?

i know your plumber said the pump is ok but it does sound like the pump. your boiler isnt stayin on long because it cant get rid of the heat so it just shuts down on overheat

yes you can get any clock just may need re wiring which your brother in law can sort. sounds like a very old system and if you dont have a summer valve in your airing cupboard which will be a red handled 22mm gate valve which turns off the rads so you just get your hot water in the summer then thats...
