Aerial Booster - Power in Loft

Hi folks, I'm looking to add a powered aerial booster in the loft to supply two TVs. I'd put a new large aerial in the loft and used a basic splitter, but the signal just isn't strong enough for the cable runs to give clean signal for Freeview. So, booster it is. I already have a light in the loft t...

thanks for the replies. it prob is about 1/2 in gap - so I can live with looking at it - if not the missus's face when she sees it ;-) this is the final stage, which started with ripping out a lot of boxing-in - so don;t want to do that. Yes, the connector would be going into the full bore of the so...

Pan Connector Conundrum

Hi folks, I'm in the final throws of renovating an en-suite. Prob I've hit is that connecting the pan. As this was all boxed in before, I am left with the grey soil pipe protruding from the floor an inch or so, then a 90deg bend. With the style of pan we're installing, you can see the pipe, so have ...

Trap not connecting to basin waste

Hi folks, strange/infuriating one here. I bought a lever pop-up up waste from ebay, but when I came to connect the trap (standard marley 32mm bottle trap), I could not get a watertight connection. The problem simply seems to be that there is not enough thread on the waste to screw onto (approx 15mm)...

Had a look at the switch in the kitchen marked "water heater" (only have ever used the GCH to heat water since we moved in). Similar story. It's on a spur, and reads : across L - N : 197v (would have expected 240v) across L - E : 244v across N - E : 42v (would have expected 0v) There is a ...

Thanks for that, worrying, but at least explained. Question though, is this likely to be a fault or something deliberate? As I said above, the existing switch directly feeds the element in the water tank. My fear being that this is something that couldn't be "fixed" without compromising th...

OK, so had a further check. The switch I was hooking into is on a spur, but as I was wiring as if a double socket, I thought this would be ok. However, just went back with the multimeter : (across the feed coming into the first switch) across L - N : 18v (would have expected 240v) across L - E : 240...

RCD Spur for Shower Pump

hi folks, I've taken a spur from the fused switch for the immersion element in the airing cupboard. I converted the existing single box to a dual box ( m ) so I could easily put the fused switch back in. I connected the single RCD switch ( m ) off the feed to the fused switch - i.e. a very short spu...

Push-fit Service Valves & Shower Pump

Hi folks, getting ready to install new shower pump & thermostatic shower. I've used Speedfit push-fit fittings so far and have used the standard service valves to isolate fittings. Been thrown slightly, as the instructions for pump state explicitly that it must be full bore, non-restricting (gat...

Choosing a Shower Pump

Hi folks, going to be adding a shower pump as part of en-suite renovation. Was looking at the Salamander pumps on Screwfix and the Showerforce pumps on B&Q, but the guidance on what is 'best' is vague to say the least. I obviously want as powerful a shower as I can get, but recognise that I don'...

Mait or Silicon for Basin to furniture

Hi folks, kinda captured it all there! I've just put in a new basin onto new fitted furniture. I used Plumbers Mait to seat the basin onto the furniture. I had thought that I'd be running a bead of silicon sealant around the basin for a seal, but looking at it now (tidied up a little), the mait [b]l...

B@ggeration. Anchor screw rescue required!!

Hi folks, am mounting a towel radiator on a porcelain tiled wall. After several lifetimes, I've drilled the 4 holes required. I've drilled them wide enough so that I can use plasterboard wall anchors (the metal collapsible type) directly into the wall behind the tile (so as not to split the tile). S...

cutting plywood - rec size?

Hi folks - this may be a very dumb qn, but here goes.... I am going to be tiling a floor 239cm x 189cm. The flooring is 18mm flooring hardboard t&g sheets. I've bought 244cmx122cm 6mm hardwood plywood to cover it first. My question was what is recommended for cutting these sheets - is it better ...

Couple of shower pump questions

Hi folks, my en-suite & bathroom project continues.... I want to add a shower pump to the en-suite system. I have a H/W tank in airing cupboard right next to the shower (thru a stud partition). Cold in loft. - what determines how powerful a pump I can use? The H/w tank is 140litres (would need t...
