one possible reason for cracks down plasterboard joints is the plasterer didn't use scrim tape on the joints. scrim holds the plaster in the joint making it invisable. as for the use of artex they used this as a filler because it hardly ever cracks. i'd start by asking how he covered the joints prio...

what Aidan said about the pva is correct, but the uneven wall can be levelled by using bonding and then coating with multi finish in the normal way. a good plasterer will make short work of this.

the idea of ply over the wooden sub floor is to take up any movement due to the movement of the property or swell in the wood. 6mm ply is recommended by 90% of tilers. on site projects it is common pratice to lay on 6mm plyboard. remember to fix tiles using a flexable tile adhesive rapid set is best.

sugar soap

you can buy sugar soap in any diy store, its not expensive and can save you a whole lot of trouble. sugar soap removes any fatty deposits from the artex ceiling like cooking or tobacco stain from smoke. let it dry out before coating with pva. all it is is a cleaning agent,

pva strength

when plastering over artex i wash down with sugar soap, then apply pva undiluted. this gives a very good slow down to set. leave pva for about 10 - 15 minutes before plastering depending on temp. hope this helps
