I think you will have a problem with sagging shelves with the method that you're suggesting I agree, the width is 1.1m so almost any material is going to sag with a heavy load. I found a sag calculator which has been very useful: Google "woodbin.com/calcs/sagulator.htm" So, as you say, un...

...you could inset 4 adjustable shelving strips down either side What a great suggestion, thanks. I had a look and I think this is the way to go as it would be good to be able to adjust the shelves. Shame the router bit is expensive, I'll have to see if I already have something similar in my kit or...

If you are only storing the clothes your best bet is to seal them away in vacuum pack bags, such as these: Google "7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_8&products_id=109992" It will mean having your clothes pressed or ironed to removed the creases once you get them out of st...

Best material for book shelves

I have a space on top of some fitted cupboards where I would like to use for book shelves. There is a wall on one side but the other side is open, so I was thinking of building a frame to sit in the space with through dado joints used for the shelves. I don't want to use brackets on the wall as I wo...

Thanks for the advice

I phoned all the electrical schemes to see if they had any work registered at my address, none of them did, which implies the electrician who did the work knows nothing about the regulations. In the end I got an electrical inspection for the whole house done, cost was £180. I found the electrician t...

Polystyrene decoration is not illegal, you can still buy them (obviously since you were going to fit it) but it becomes a fire hazard when painted, which you would probably have done.

Electrical safety checks for work done a couple of years ago

We are selling our house and had a query from the buyer regarding any electrical work done and asking to see the certification. We had a new consumer unit installed as part of work to replace the kitchen back in 2008 but, due to a dispute with the kitchen fitting company, we never received the elect...

New consumer unit, how much testing required?

Calling all electricians... I've had a new consumer unit installed as part of work to replace my kitchen. To certify the work the electrician is saying he will have to remove all bulbs and electrical devices from sockets and then go round testing each socket/bulb connector when the system is dead an...
