secret gutter?

My reclaimed clay tile roof butts up to the existing house. I have been advised to use "soakers" and lead flashing for weather proofing on the pitched section. Could anyone tell me if I should put in a secret gutter underneath?

Many thanks

Thanks for that stoneyboy

The tiles are nibbed. Someone else suggested the galvanised clouts might be more practical. When you nail a tile should you use two nails for each tile or is one the standard?

copper clout nails for clay tiles?

I am matching my old roof on a small extension and have 500 reclaimed clay tiles. I am planning on using 3.35 x 30mm copper clout nails to fix them to the battens. Could anyone tell me if I am using the correct nails and also how many of the tiles should be nailed?

Many thanks

Or (if this is allowed) you can email me the diagram at hipframe at googlemail dot com

Thanks for that bd3cc

I assume from what you are saying that my third rafter (sloping up the wall to the wall plate) would then just work like a jack rafter and lean against the hip at the top?

Thanks bd3cc - the problem I have is that three corner rafters at the hip all meet at the same point at the top so I'm not sure what sits on what...

Hipped roof frame joint?

Hi - I am building a hipped roof that comes off the side of my house like a lean to. I have my plate along the wall and another timber to fix along the house wall at top for my notched rafters. Can anyone tell what should happen where the hip rafter meets the wood at the top. Is there a special join...

do I need tile and halves?

I am building a small hipped roof on an extension using old reclaimed clay tiles to match the house. I've got the tiles and the bonnets but no tile and halves. Could anyone tell me if there is any reason why I shouldn't just use half tiles on the back gable?

Thanks

closing cavities at the top

I'm at the top of my walls and I have been told I must close the cavities along the top. Could anyone tell me what is the best (Building Control) way to do this. I have been told to use slate or soffit board or similar. Also, I'm not sure if whatever I use should be bedded down on mortar or what? Ma...

Just an update if anyone was interested...

I have been given an old book called Building Construction Volume One by W B McKay (1938) and this has some very detailed diagrams of my exact feature on P139.

It's pretty much exactly as described by the help here - so thanks!
