Re: Replacing Inline Extractor Fan Plus Light With Ceiling Fan Only

As above you need to establish what the second three core cable is doing and whether it is required be connected or alternatively made safe. I know there are no rules concerning live conductors core colours. But I tend to use the grey as a neutral (and sleeve it blue), then the black as a the switch...

Re: Trying to Wire in a new Light and Switch in Hallway and Cupboard

What are you testing voltage with? If non-contact pen/stick or neon screwdriver tester, you are very likely getting misleading results.

If you wish to add another gang/switch to operate an additional light, you do require a neutral. Which by what you have said, does not seem to be present.

Re: Noisy Shower Room Ceiling Extractor Fan Manrose Gold

I would have drilled an entry hole in the ex fan base, so cable came directly in to the unit from ceiling. The cables can then be located at a more advantageous position to allow a less bulky mess.

Re: Garage Power in new Property Complete Reworking

You still need to conform to BS7671 and Part P. These would include correct selection of cable, routing cables in the prescribed safe zones, inspection, test and certification. If this is beyond your scope and your previous electrician is unfortunately no longer with us. I suggest you employ another...

Re: Wall Light With Pull Switch and Confusion Over Which Wires go Where

Could you post some pictures of what you have? Blue, red and browns are not a normal combination of colours. I would guess that the earth and neutrals go to there corresponding terminals. Then there would be a terminal to connect one of the switch wires to and the incoming live is connected to the o...

Re: Garage Power in new Property Complete Reworking

Replacing sockets, lights and damaged cables does not require notification. With regards to testing, it is always wise to test the part of the installation are working on prior to undertaking work and then again after. I say this, as there maybe a historical fault on the circuit, that needs attentio...

Re: How do I Turn off Bathroom Fan With This Switch?

Yes it is known as a keyswitch, so you do need a key to switch on/off.
You will need the manufacturers info to get a replacement key.
But another solution, would be to remove the fuse from the fuse holder just to the left of the switch.

Re: Adding New Sockets to Room That has Been Partitioned

Anything is possible and you have a couple of options that can be manufactured to attain your goal. Yet, as you have said you do not have the ability to test, if you do not have that skill set or the equipment to perform the tests required, to proof the installation is safe to commission and put int...

Re: Noisy Shower Room Ceiling Extractor Fan Manrose Gold

Yes the fans are double insulated and a CPC (earth is not required), but as an electrician the earth is a very important part of testing and fault finding, so we who care leave the CPC present at all equipment and accessories. There is also a related regulation within BS7671 that states that a CPC m...

Re: 3 Way Kitchen Light Switch With odd Wiring Help Needed

As above, just to clarify. The cables that link across the common terminals do so to supply a live connection to each gang. The live connection comes for one of the thicker cables, which is permanently live from the supply. This perm live is the thicker cable that is connected up with the link cable...

Re: Noisy Shower Room Ceiling Extractor Fan Manrose Gold

I would recommend the Envirovent SIL100T. Very quiet fan and has won awards, not over expensive at around £35.00. The back plate will likely be different and location of terminals, but that can be dealt with. The central hole/duct would identify the size of the spigot, they are normally somewhere ne...

Why use junction boxes? Checked, double checked and checked again, using what method? and who will be completing the required documentation? Your table saw will likely have an inrush current at start up. In what way did your previous work pass with flying colours? With what you have said, I find it ...

Re: Chandelier Doesn't Switch on or off Ceiling Light

What tends to happen with friends or someone down the pub, that claims they can do stuff, that they cannot! Is that they see red or brown wires and think they are all live ones and see black or blue wires and think they are neutrals. Which when it comes to lighting is not strictly true, as you will ...
