you can get circuit breakers that replace fuses. safety wise there is no advantage. the only advantage is that if a fuse blows you have to replace the wire, on a trip switch you just reset the switch. it doesn't substitute for a modern RCD equiped board as the trips are overcurrent devices to protec...

The run to the outbuilding will probably be done with SWA, steel wire armoured cable. strictly speaking the outbuilding should have it's own independent earth through the use of an earth rod. if it was me (bearing in mind I haven't seen the installation) I wouldn't take a run from your house consume...

that sounds ok, as long as the repair is accessable for maintainance as I think you are talking about the screw type choccie blocks. I would wrap them in 3 layers of insulating tape as well, I have had a fizz off blocks before, even though they are supposed to be insulated, and a loose cable could t...

if your live and neutral join together you have a dead short and it will blow a fuse or trip an MCB. most likely thing off the top of my head is a neutral has come adrift bihind a faceplate somewhere or in the consumer unit.

whoever told you that is wrong.
the electricity goes 'out' on the live and 'returns' on the neutral
they both carry current.
a live earth reversal refers to the live and earth (which should not normally carry current) you are talking about the live and neutral (which do)

if the house is only two years old then your sockets should already be RCD protected at the board, so you don't need an extra RCD. If not talk to the builder as they don't meet the regs that were in place at the time! I wouldn't have much confidence in the installation meeting the regs judging by yo...

be aware though of the requirements for RCDs on these circuits. If your current socket circuit isn't RCD protected then use an RCD protected fused spur unit.

if non of the above check out try changing the faceplate, it may have failed. Even better, use a suitable tester to see if there is power coming in to the socket.

I have however seen crimps fail and cause fires!! so much for the regs :o)
they are difficult to apply correctly unless you are experienced in their use. use either maintainance free JB or have a look at helacon push in connectrors.
