Correct door & frame sizes?

Hi, We moved into an old cottage 3 years ago. The previous owner had pvcu doors & windows fitted before we moved in but the doors are awful and the frame is out which allows cold air in. Not very good in Winter months! We want to go back to timber doors and frames as we prefer it and it'll be mo...

Fitting a fireplace - carbon monoxide?

Hi I have an open fire in the lounge and I am wanting to rip out the brick surround and fit a cast iron insert and timber surround/mantel. As I've never done this before it's a little daunting and I had though that I read somewhere that you have to make sure that both the insert and surround are sea...

Painting sash windows in rosewood

Hi, Little new to this I'm afraid. I have 2 timber sash windows which are caked in rosewood stain/paint (think paint but not sure?). They're a little worn and the paint is flakey in places. I'm thinking about burning off the layers and going to bare wood. If I do this presuambly I need a primer, und...

Making a boiler cabinet?

Hi,

I am aware that there is a previous thread on this subject.

https://www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects/boilerhousing.htm

My problem is that my wall mounted boiler is 400mm deep.

Most off the shelf units are c300mm deep.

How can I get over the shortfall?

Thanks.

Fixings for heavy shelving to plasterboard?

Wiring a Rangemaster 110 Cooker - correct cable?

Hi, I have to wire my Rangemaster 110 Cooker. Currently, it looks as if a 6mm2 twin & earth is supplying. It's a gas cooker, with the sparks supplying the hotplate, and ignition for the gas burners. Is a 6mm2 really necessary and if so, I guess that a Part P Elec has to fit? Can somebody confirm...

Dimmer Switch on mains fluorescent downlighters?

Hi, We've recently had some mains fed fluorescent downlighters fitted to our Kit ceiling. The light is good but if not a little overpowering (there are 9 in a room size (plan) of 18m2. I was wondering whether I could simply swap over the single light switch operating the lights for a dimmer? Thanks.

WIll downlighter bell housing cause fire to insulation above

Hi, I'm to fit a series of spotlights in my kitchen. The Kit is in a single storey extension, with a small roof void above filled with typical wool insulation. I'm concerned that once in-situ, the bell housings may get hot and then set fire to the insulation/ceiling joists etc. ? Can you confirm ple...
