Centering wall on foundations?

Do I have to center a wall on the foundations? It's a retaining garden wall, 1m high and 0.23m (9") thick. The foundations were going to be .6m wide but I hear from other posts on this site that you need just 100mm either side of the wall, meaning the foundations only need to be 0.43m instead o...

Can you please just clear up one thing for me. I have had 10 builders come and look at this 'simple garden wall'. None of them agree on any of the important aspects, which is why I have decided to do it myself. One guy will say the footings have to be 800mm deep, another 300mm, another says that you...

Mortar for retaining wall

I am building a retaining wall and was wondering if there are any special requirements for the mortar. Presumably it would have to be stronger than normal mortar and have more mositure resistant attributes?

Hollow blocks versus cavity wall

I am building a retaining wall, it's in an L shape, approx 1m high, 4m long down one side and 3.5m down the other. The way I see it I can either build it from hollow blocks rebarred and filled with concrete or as a double skin cavity wall rebarred with concrete. There is no need for any finish since...

Soundproofing neighbouring wall

I live in an end terrace house and have some new neighbours. The houses are divided by a single wall with studd partitioning on either side. Unfortunately for me, the noise from the neighbours 'late night activities' comes into my house even if I am on a different floor (the homes are 3 stroies). Is...

How do you determine 'solid ground'? In another article on this site you say that a square peg 50mm x 50mm should not be able to be banged into the ground more than 6 inches 'without difficulty'. 'without difficulty' is a rather subjective phrase since it depends on the size of the hammer and how mu...

Retaining Garden Wall help

I am building a retaining garden wall that is 1.5 metres high. It is in an 'L' shape, 5m down one side and 3.7m down the other. I intend to build this on a strip foundation but I have numerous questions that I cannot find answers too. The footings will be 0.6m wide and 0.45m deep. I am unsure whethe...
