Hinges for garden swing seat

I want to build a garden swing seat. I want to copy a design a friend has in his garden, which he bought from an American company that no longer trades in this country. Instead of swinging on chains, his seat swings on hinges attached at the bottom. I have tried everywhere to find these hinges but I...

laying solid wood flooring.

I want to lay a solid oak floor on top of the old original floorboards. They will run in the same direction. Is there any problem with this? The old floorboads are pretty flat but do I still need to lay plywood over the top of them? I was really hoping tho keep the height down to match the carpets i...

Re: Hardwood on top of floorboards

Thanks Welsh Bickie. Never thought about plywood but I suppose this would give it a more even surface.

Hardwood on top of floorboards

I want to lay a solid oak floor on top of floorboards. I have been told the best way to do this is by secret nailing. Is this good advice? I was told to put it straight on top of the floorboards but someone else mentioned that I should lay some special builders paper first. (I think it was called wa...

Thanks stokedan 1. I took the radiator off. I was concerned that water might gush out of the thermostatic valve but it was ok and I have now put a cap on the valve.

Noise when using downstairs toilet

Over the last couple of months I have been getting a very loud noise from the plumbing when the downstairs toilet has been used. It is when the cistern is being refilled and it happens just before it is full when the flow into the system is slowing down and just about to stop. The only way to stop t...

radiator removal with thermostatic valves

I want to remove a radiator but I'm not sure how to close the thermostatic valve off. I've had a look inside but can't find anything to turn to shut it off. Do I just leave it on the frost setting and unscrew the valve from the radiator? I would have thought if I did this I would still get some wate...

hardwood floor on floorboards.

I am hoping to lay a hardwood floor on top of floorboards in my hall. The hardwood boards would lay in the same direction as the original floorboards. After watching a video on this site, it seemed to be quite straightforward, laying the hardwood on top of underlay boards. However, my wife has just ...

Draining the central heating system

I have been having problems draining my central heating system. I have two draincocks in the garage underneath my combination boiler. One is 1100mm from the floor, the other is 200mm up. I have no problems with the higher draincock and water flows out as soon as I open it. Nothing drains out of the ...

Thanks for the advice Rosebery. I rang Samuel Heath Technical Support but I could only speak to a woman in sales. She thought one half inch feed to a bath was ok. Anyway, I went ahead and fitted the bath and the flow rate seems to be ok. I did include check valves. It's difficult to say whether they...

Is one 1/2 inch feed to a bath enough?

I am fitting an overflow fiiler to a bath. There is only one 1/2 inch inlet. I assume I have to mix the hot and cold feed through a 15mm T joint before I send it to the filler. Will there be enough pressure to fill the bath at a reasonable rate? The bath I took out had two 22mm feeds. The hot water ...

Fitting of an overflow filler

I have just bought a Samuel Heath Xenon overflow filler for my bath, along with two valves. The filler has only one inlet on it. I was expecting two. One for the cold and one for the hot. Do I need some kind of mixer valve that mixes the water before it is connected to the filler?
