Hi John, to be honest the best way to stop the flaking is to remove it all. If you don't want to do that because of the lead then you will need to try and remove the flaking bits then use a filler to make it look fairly flat. After that give it a primer coat where needed then one or two undercoats a...

Hi John, You can use whichever type of primer you want. Just make sure that one is completely dry before putting on the next coat of paint if it's not the same type, ie oil or waterbased. Oil and water based paints do not mix but that is only when they are wet. Good luck.

Hi JG1999, I can't see what using water and PVA will do. It certainly wont help you get rid of the marks. You should be able to wash down the walls if you used a vinyl matt emulsion. If the paint is coming off when you are washing it you may find it's the make of emulsion. Some makes are terrible es...

Hi, I would size the walls with either a packet of size which can be bought and mixed using the manufacturers guidelines or use normal paste but watered down as the packet says. If you were going to use just size and not a mist coat first then give the walls 2 coats of size to stop wallpaper drying ...

Hi c1derarmy, there are a couple of ways to do it use a bolster and hammer and hope for the best, sometimes they will just pop off. Once you have got the first ones off the rest are easier. If you go on a site like e-bay you can get a tool that goes on a hammer drill and do it that way. Either way t...

Hi, agree with pauanui's answer and would like to add that when you attach it to the door make sure that all the screws you use to hold it in place are on the inside of the door so that it cannot be removed from the outside. You would be suprised at how many people have put them on the outside.

Hi sfallon, I would wait about 6 months before doing it. That gives it time to dry properly and if any cracks are going to appear they will during this time. If you want to do something to the wall in the meantime I would give it a mist coat, ie a watered down coat or 2 of emulsion. As new plaster w...

Hi Gillian, a mist coat is just a watered down coat of emulsion. If the walls are just new plaster then I would sand them lightly just in case there are any little bumps on them, then give it a very thin coat of emulsion just a bit of white emulsion will do with a fair bit of water in with it. Then ...

Hi, are you sure that it's the paste coming off the wall and not the emulsion. If you have given it a really good wash down after taking the wallpaper off and filled and made sure it is flat then you should be able to give it a coat of paint. If there is any paste still on the walls you will soon fi...

Hi, yes you will need to wash all the walls. If you don't and there is still some paste on them the paint will not stick. Once you have all the paper off them give them good wash down with washing up liquid or sugar soap in the water then rinse them off. Then you will need to fill any cracks and giv...

Hi GreenwichDIY, usually the 16/24 hours relates to the times in between coats say in between undercoat and glossing to ensure the paint is dry enough to take the following coat. If you can undercoat it fairly early in the day it will be touch dry within a couple of hours, then you will be able to c...

Hi, If you want eggshell type finish just use a Vinyl Silk emulsion. If you mix it with a Matt finish it will probably end up being patchy. To get a proper eggshell finish you will need to buy eggshell paint. You won't actually make an eggshell finish using a matt emulsion.

Hi, I'm probably too late for this post but don't forget to get really good finish you will need to use good quality paint brush. Something like Hamilton Perfection. Cheap brush = poor finish.

Hi moggy, thanks for the reply. Looks like I will have to get someone in to do it for me then. I have added spurs in the past but not put in exterior points so better have professional to do it. Thanks again.

Installing electric point in outhouse

Hi everyone, I would like to install an electric socket in a outhouse so that I can connect a freezer to it. The outhouse is only 2 metres away from the house and there is a wall going to it that cable could be attatched to. Has anyone got ideas on what I would need to do. Don't suppose I could just...
