Re: Mains water to outbuilding
Yes they can go in same trench but water needs to be a minimum of 750mm deep from ground level
Hmm... more digging this weekend then! Why so deep? Frost protection? The SWA cable has no minimum depth, but should be "deep enough to avoid likely damage" a...

Mains water to outbuilding

Hello all, I have just dug a trench to run an electricity supply from the house to an outbuilding (trench is 9m long and 500mm deep) and it occurred to me that I might as well run a (cold) water supply while I am at it (and while the path is dug up!). Presumably MDPE pipe is correct for this applica...

Assuming that the wiring has been done to usual modern practice then you can draw up to 13A from any given socket, up to a maximum of 30A off any given ring main. It would be very unusual for the sockets in a given room to be on different rings, so that would imply that you can draw up to 30A total ...

Thank you for the advice.
Renewing the CU with one which will take RCBO's is an advantage if the one fitted will not accept them. But having just 2 RCD's in an old house is asking for problems.
Yes, that's exactly what I think the situation is. Also the old CU has not got space for mo...

Tanalised timber - lifetime?

Hi All, Following some groundworks to relay the drains crossing the garden and to lower the ground level, I need to make a retaining edge for some gravel, about 6 inches high and four feet long. The easiet aesthetically acceptable solution would be a tanalised board supported by maybe 2x2 tanalised ...

Old House - general advice needed

Hi all, I live in an old (c. 400 years) house which I believe was totally rewired in about 1968, but I think not very well. The previous owners had the old re-wireable fuses replaced with a Wylex MCB-based CU, I guess about 10 years ago. I'm not sure what the correct term is, but I have a general ce...

Seems to me it's no worse than having Furnox in the radiator circuit, which also has the potential to leak into the DHW if the heat exchanger coil fails. In fact, I found that Furnox makes a combined antifreeze and corrosion inhibitor which looks ideal.

Thanks. What you have said is very helpful. Matters are complicated further by the fact that it is a listed building... Since the solar panels are part of the "external appearance" I do not want to open the can of worms involved with replacing them yet. However, I will investigate changing...

Solar DHW help please...

Hi All, I have recently bought a house in which there is a 25-year-old solar water heating system in need of some TLC. I've reverse-engineered most of how the system is supposed to work, I think, but I could do with some help in a few specific areas. The system is a standard vented setup fed from a ...

Re: solar DHW system - repressurising?

Ian, did you get anywhere with this? I have just bought a house which has a 25-year-old solar water heating system installed, about which I have very little information. I have reverse-engineered most of how I think it is supposed to work, but it almost certainly needs refilling/repressurising - the...
