Thanks for all the info, I can now understand the problem but I will have to hand it over to an electrician who can do the necessary checks, should have bought a petrol mower:)

As a follow up having took another look at the socket I realised how easy it would be to make it into a ring instead of the spur, so my thinking was if I did this I could then put in a 20A MCB to see if this solves the problem?

I have just bought myself a new lawnmower, it's rated at 1800W, the problem I have is that it keeps tripping the MCB, when it does start up it runs fine but if I stop and then restart the breaker trips, I have only tried it plugged in the garage and haven't actually tried to cut my overgrown grass y...

I would like to install a motor to open my attic trap door, the door is quite large at approx 2m x 1m and opens up into the attic space, I will need to have switches to open and close it below and above so wondered if this is actually posssible? Also any surgestions on the type of motor I should be ...

I have 4 halogen lamps rated at 240v 50w and wanted to put them on one dimmer switch, I noticed that the dimmer switch is rated at 400w but only 200w for halogen light, so some quick maths tell me I have 200w so is it ok to use the dimmer switch being that it is at the maximum limit?
