Condesate waste pipe

As htg engineer states, most of the recent problems were due to poor installations. Apparently there was close to 50,000 frozen condensate pipes in the space of 2-3 weeks so maybe its time for all new boiler installations to be checked/tested by someone other than the person that installs it. Howeve...

converting detached garage into habitable room

I'm looking to convert my detached garage into a habitable room/office and have been on the uk.gov planningportal website which seems to suggest that since October 2008 garage conversions generally fall into permitted development. I'm wary of contacting my LAPD for so called advice [we have history]...

should I replace my old boiler

Taking into account the energy used/needed to make, transport and fit a new boiler, is there really much to choose between fitting a new inefficient boiler with a balanced flue and no fan or pcb, lasting 25-30 years, [if they were still made] or an A rated state of the art energy efficient boiler, t...

New central heating cost- am I being robbed

I'm not disagreeing with Alex above and I'm probably wrong, so apologies in advance but I've always thought an unvented system relied on the incoming mains pressure being up to scratch, that so, wouldn't the system struggle at peak times if 2 or more showers were running at the same time an then the...

Who checks/test GSRI installations

Thank you htg, knowing that RGIs have a on site inspection every 5 years is very reassuring, I imagine that equates to less than 1 on site inspection per 150 installations," Not practical to test every installation" ? simplicity itself in comparision to your recent call requiring every gas...

Who checkes/tests GSRI installations

I'm not sure where htg is coming from regarding re-sitting assessments every 5 years, what really concerns me is on site workmanship and know that nothing serves to improve workmanship more than the thought of an independent third party like LABC calling in to check/test the one's work. I've noticed...

Who checks/tests GSRI installations

Thank you for your help, though I have to say the posts have left me disillusioned, for all the pontificating I have read about the need to use only a GSRI to fit my boiler, or a Part P electrician should I need my house rewired, it turns out that so long as they pay their annual subscriptions the 2...

Who checks/tests GSRI installations

I employed a builder recently to form a window opening, replace the roof slates on the back addition with tiles, and break into a drain run/form a manhole in order to create a W.C. Despite the works all being relatively minor and non life threatening and regardless of the builder being time served w...

Do permitted development rights overide planning policy ???

You don't say how old the house is, I believe permitted development rights only exist for properties built before 1948. but you probably know that.

Help- Selling house and no planning permission

Your friend and your builder are most likely correct regarding the need for planning permission, the extension probably fell within permitted development rights, however LABC would/should have been notified about the extension, in order for them to oversee things like depths of footings, dampcourse[...

Can I remove my central heating system

I had a Servowarm system like yours back in the seventies, we used to top up the system by pouring a few jugs of water into the expansion tank/vessel [which in our case was located on the landing] every few months. I wouldn't start ripping out the pipes, rads, etc before draining the remaining water...

should I replace my old boiler

Thanks htg and Neil, but if I'm to believe what you say, and there's no reason not to, it seems the only thing economical about the new generation of boilers is the truth in manufactures literature.

should I replace my old boiler

We had central heating installed in our 3 bed semi around 1980,the boiler is a floorstanding Potteron CF situated in small shed attached to house and the hot water is gravity fed. I've replaced the thermocoupling, the pump and the ball valve to header tank over the years for a total outlay of around...

canI fit a boiler,ONCE AGAIN

If a so called competent person is so special, why are they not called qualified person, or would that maybe put a spanner in the works being as a time served heating engineer with City and Guilds A and B qualifications and close to 40 yrs experience is at present forbidden to even fit his own gas c...
