Re: Chimney Breast Removal

That's great :-)

How did they support the upper part of the chimney in the end?

Just curious!
Cheers

Richard, its difficult for us to determine from the photos, but their seems to be some mortar on the purlin a little way in from the gable. Is the purlin coming out of the wall? or rather is the wall moving away from the purlin? Been in many hundreds of roof spaces and not seen anything quite like t...

You can get an acceptable fixing in lightweight blocks, especially if the units are in a 'run' over the doorway as the units also pick up support from neighbouring units and their fixings. However, I would use just regular blocks as they are cheaper, and do take plugs better. Not necessarily concret...

Think hard before removing your chimney.

Any builder worth his salt will be able to tackle this, God knows we have done plenty, but the other comments are also true, regarding the structural aspects. If you are leaving the external part of the stack in place (common), you will need quite a hefty steel up in the loft (often at wall plate le...

leaking toilet cistern

If it's dissapearing down the pan ... why worry ... as long as it's not leaking out onto the floor..! I would 'worry' a lot! erm....water meter! The cistern should hold water. There is obviously a problem with the flush valve or its set up/installation. It's a pain (but a no cost option) to let it ...

Hi guys, Perry is right in what he says. But I am a bit confused, how come you can see the bricks underneath the patio door set from the inside? Usually, the door set sits on a DPC which is more or less 150mm or two courses up from the outside paving level AND the inside floor level comes up to the ...

Hiya, You could try a dry lining with battens, insulation, vapour barrier, plasterboard and finish. But then you will need new skirts, and possibly little window cills on top of lining. It is also no guarantee, depending on your exposure and temps etc. You might consider a little wall mounted heater...

Remember that the most of the chimney is supported by the brickwork bond, so actually there is not that much weight to carry. Let us know how you get on. I dare not tell you how little that the brickies of old used to bond into chimney breasts sometimes. I have lost count of how many chimnys that w...

Dude! You shouldn't build block walls off an upstairs timber floor! Even lightweight 'celcon' type blocks will crack up because of the flex in an ordinary floor. Stand in the middle of your bedroom floor and jump up and down once......ornaments stopped rattling yet? Stud walls dont have to be cr*p. ...

Cutting blocks is ok, it wont hurt the block........

Hi Will, Its quite normal to have to cut a block down to finish level with the top of the window. You may have to cut down the blocks or use brickettes to go over the top of the lintel as well (depending on design of lintel), leveling up with the main blocks either side in the process. Don't move yo...
