Barn conversions, most of which are project-managed by their owners, are more than just building projects. This is all about challenging yourself and your (maybe) fixed ideas about buildings in general, and your own built environment in particular. The prospect of creating living space within what w...

Safest bet would be a 1:3 cement/sharp sand render, then skim with Thistle after a few weeks. - If the chimney breast is prone to damp, salts will break through ordinary bonding coat eventually, leading to popping, scaling and more work. Have you looked at the causes of the damp ? Dodgy chimney flau...

Hi Helen I think most LA's in Britain will run a mile from a proposal to use zinc as a barn-conversion roof ! Are you in a conservation area ? Is the rest of the building architecturally 'nice' ? What are your budget constraints ? Corrugated iron will be fixed to purlins because it runs up-and-down ...

Just on a similar job, myself, so here's the EASY way ! - • Bring plasterboard on studding to the edges of where you want the radiused corner to be, leaving 1" of upright stud exposed each side. • Shape alloy mesh to the bend you want and fix this to the studs with stainless steel screws. (This...

I agree with Dan the Man. Aquapanel is the way to go. - Also, make sure your battening out is TREATED timber. Only ever fix Aquapanel with the stainless bumper screws they provide, and don't forget to scrim the joints with tape and tile cement just prior to tiling up. An Aquapanel'd shower cubicle w...

Small holes in plasterboard

I have seen people drive themselves half-mental trying to deal with small holes in plasterboard dry-lining, so here is the easy way: DON'T's : Don't try to fix another piece of plasterboard to the back of the panel using plaster ! You will just end up with filthy fingers and about twenty little bits...

Some concrete interlocking tiles can be used safely at absurdly low pitches, except in areas where prevailing wind is against you. Most concrete plain tiles should not be used under 40 degrees. If the pitch is shallow (as I suspect, if it was previously an asbestos corrugated sheet roof), you could ...

Easy fix Velux - no scaffold or ladders

Many people do not realise that it is perfectly feasible to fit a Velux roof window without once ever having to step outside onto the roof ! - During 40 years of house restorations/renovations, I have done several like this and it really is quite easy: - If there is a sloping ceiling already in plac...

Even humping 8 x 4 x 1/2 on to a lifter on your own can lead
to back problems and worse.

Ideally, you need a mate for the ceiling work.

If this really is impossible, consider the extra time spent
scrimming between smaller sheets well spent if it keeps
you out of ER !

Hard (ie 1:3) cement mortar will eventually prove less than perfect for that job. Stone walls in lime mortar move gently with changes in humidity and temperature and the pointing will come away in places, for sure. My advice would be to dig it all out (set or not) and replace with pointing in a 1:1:...
