Depends.

Are you casting a slab over the top to form a solid floor? Or are you installing a suspended floor? (block and beam or timber)

I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'your manhole'.
The underground drainage for your property will all go to a manhole somewhere. But it will most probably be outside the boundary of your land.
Why do you want to build a manhole? please explain what you require and I'll help as best I can.

That is because you are most probably trying to drill into the lintel above the opening. Fix a piece of timber to the wall above the window with a strong adhesive. no more nails etc. Paint it to match the room then fix your curtain pole to it.
So put the drill away and get sticking!

Hi tooly, The best way to do this would be to buy some rigid celotex or kingspan insualtion. it comes in 8x4 foot sheets usually and a range of thicknesses, so you can cut and lay it between the exisiting joists and get it to line up just fractionally less than the top of the floor joists. if the loose fill is up to the height of the existing floor joists you can just insulate straight over the top with space blanket encapsulated insulation.
