if the door did have the trench already routered into it this is for the smoke seal,which is a brush strip. both expand during fire to seal the gap.
I have hung doors with and without the smoke seal depending if the door has been routered to take it

you need an exterior pva wood glue but looking at the photo you have damage to your board.matchboard are placed one after another during fixing ie tongue and groove,so to take a middle section out without damage is impossible. The remedy is to take the old board and split the back part of the groove...

Any 2 pac filler from an automotive store will do,isopon etc. And depending on your type of hinge,look at the middle of the hinge you may notice a fixing hole in the middle of the back plate.You can fix the hinge there also,using a 3.5x16 wood screw. but you will no longer be able to adjust the door...

to remove the old sealant use a piece of wood 18mmx18mm.
sharpen the end to represent a chisel if you like and gently ease the sealent off. Re-sealing is an art, done properly you use a similar stick to smooth the sealant after application, with a water spray

i assume you are using the router upside down? if so you do need to have
as little space as possible around your cutter
