You are likely to need some insulation as well as a DPC (if not already there) also some kind of vapour barrier I did something similar to this recently. I used 12mm plasterboard with a layer of ecotherm boards (£16 plus vat for 8 x6 ft sheet from jewson) sandwiched between the plasterboard and the...

Steel would be better. Timber will work as long as your not planning a hot tub, but the floor may have a bit of 'bounce' when its finished. Use the proper metal joist hangers or the floor may creek.

Before you start spending on this you need to do more research. Beg steal or borrow a damp meter and do some tests all over the walls, if the readings are higher around the suspect area and then get even higher the closer to the floor you get then it could be rising damp. The high humidity in the ro...

It all depends what state the existing varnish is in. If its okay with no cracks or flaking then you should get away with just a light rub over with a 240grit sand paper just to give the paint a key and a wipe over with white spirit to remove the dust, other wise its a case either chemical or manual...

I've seen loads of surveyors reports with this on, its usually nothing to worry about, if there were any damp readings inside the house this would be on the report. He's just making a point that it's not upto modern building regs. If its an old house: Have a look at the outside of the building aroun...

You can insulation boards from Jewson that can be used for this, Just pack up to the required height and put a couple of inches of concrete or screed over the top. They meet regs for DPM so no need for a separate on, should help keep the room warm too.

You can get insulation boards from your local builders merchant that are for this. I think they are about 2inch thick but I don't see why you can't use more than one layer, just lay couple inches concrete or screed on the top. The boards double up as damp proofing (you will probably need some kind o...
