Drilling in to ceilings

How do I drill into a ceiling? I want to separate two halves of a room and have the idea to screw a piece of wood into the ceiling to attach a curtain rail to.

Erecting a screen

I have a large bedroom with two windows that my children sleep in, they are a boy and a girl and I want to separate the two halves somehow. I would like some ideas please, I want a cheap option if possible. They have a curtain up at the moment but its not brilliant. Thanks.

Plastering around a newly opened fireplace

I have opened up the fireplace and have touched up the plaster around the hole, this unfortunately has cracked with the heat and fallen off. I am not sure what I can do to stop this happening again. Advice please.
