I had the same problem it was the light bulb touching the bottom of the fitting that holds the shade in place, the bit that screws onto the ceiling rose, it had started to turn brown and made the place smell like a wet fish shop.
When laying cables in the loft should they be clipped to the top or side of the joists. I always thought that the side was correct but in my new house they are on top of the joists and are getting in the way of me putting loft boards down.
