Leaking Low Pitch Roof - How To Trace The Leak Source?

There is a low pitch (twenty degrees) concrete tile roof over my kitchen extension. When it rains, especially when it is windy, water is coming through along a vertical line. This vertical line roughly follows a rainwater downpipe which goes across the roof. There is no access to the roof space. Sug...

[ [quote="Kenj"] You may just be right, but I am fed up with the rumur, bluster and bullying that emanates from the HSE or Brussels. If it is illegal to bolt a boiler to a wall and connect up some water pipes, then I for one have broken this law. Can anyeone tell me just which particular a...

Starting with the obvious, are the rad valves open? roomstat calling for heat? CH timer on at boiler? Check the pump is working by gently holding the pipes each side about ten inches from the pump. They should feel hot, about 85C. If pump OK, then turn off all rads except two to force water thru the...

Having looked at your diagram, I am concerned that there appears to be no expansion pipe for either the CH or DHW as the water heats up. There should be a small tank( as oppose to a much larger one for cold water storage) in the loft for the feed and expansion part of the CH system. These are safety...

If the previous sensible suggestions do not work, it is time to move onto the more bizarre. Try holding a tube of rolled up paper to your ear to try and detect where the noise is coming from. This should be repeated for each room in the house. Another method is to go round the walls with a stethosco...

Pending receipt of the photos, may provisional views are:- The cold feed from the loft is the pipe which goes into the bottom of the hot water cylinder. The hot feed to the hot tap should come out of the top of the cylinder. This can be checked by gently holding this pipe about 20 inches from the cy...

I am assuming you do not have a combi boiler. Normally the pump only operates to (a) heat the hot water cylinder on an indirect basis and (b) the central heating. The pump will come on when the thermostat on the hot water cylinder calls for heat or the room stat for the CH rads. First check that the...

Worth checking concrete floor with damp meter. If you do not have one, use a multimeter to measure resistance of floor with probes held about one inch apart. You will need to hold this distance constant using holes drilled in a piece of wood or other insulating material. A damp floor has a lower res...

A long time since i did physics, but the explanation goes something like this. You get a reflection off both the front and back surface of a pane of glass. Part of the light which falls on the front face of the glass is reflected and part passes thru. The light which passes thru is then refracted ( ...

Have you checked the manhole outside for a blocked drain. To clear this, you will need a set of drain rods. Be careful not to unscrew these when inserted in the drain or you will have a major problem extracting the components.
