Have you tried bleeding the radiators? Have the radiators upstairs worked before?

What kind of set up do you have? is it a combi boiler or do you have a hot water tank?

You need to protect the tap spout with a cloth and then put a wrench on it so the wrench is perpendicular to the tap and then use a big adjustable spanner on the nut. a bit of WD40 will help things along. I wouldn't use heat unless you really have to.

It turns out the diaphragm is called a baffle and is used for directing the flow of water so I'm guessing it goes on the flow side.

Column Radiator Which way up?

Hi, I've just bought a new Classic style vertical column radiator and I'm not sure which way up it goes, one end I can see all the way through I assume that this is the top the other end on one side there is some kind of diaphragm and only goes in a couple of inches, what do I put here a logical gue...

If you have a Thermostatic valve on the radiator it's most likely stuck or broken. you might be able to get it unstuck by taking the plastic part off and spraying a bit of WD40 in there otherwise you're going to have to drain down the system and replace.
