Re: Boiler Replacement Question on Current Gravity Fed and Pumped Heating System

Final Update. Thank you again for all your helpful input Atticus Finch. The engineer who came took measurements of our mains water flow and pressure. He said he was confident that we wouldn't have any flow problems were we to go for a combi boiler, especially since there are only the two of us left ...

Re: Easy question re. basin waste fitting

Hi John.

I'm trying to get a picture in my mind of your set-up. It strikes me that a bottle trap might be your answer. You could angle the horizontal outlet from it diagonally towards the outlet pipe then connect them using two short lengths of 32 mm waste pipe and a compression elbow.

Re: shower hose not sealing

Have you checked arund the edges of the shower outlet for a build up of limescale or other debris. Might be worth giving it a quick clean with wire wool or wet & dry paper.

Re: Boiler Replacement Question on Current Gravity Fed and Pumped Heating System

Since my last post I've been thinking of possibly installing a System Boiler to eliminate the F & E tank & therefore it's vent pipe. I may also consider going over to a combi-boiler since there is a 22 mm pipe feeding all my hot water taps and a cold mains water feed pipe right next to where...

Re: Boiler Replacement Question on Current Gravity Fed and Pumped Heating System

Thank you Atticus Finch. Sorry for the delay in coming back to you - been busy. Thanks in particular for the link re. a wireless cylinder stat. If I do go ahead with the boiler change, I'll probably go with a hard wired stat though because my hot water cylinder is two floors above where the controll...

Boiler Replacement Question on Current Gravity Fed and Pumped Heating System

We have a conventional boiler with gravity fed hot water and pumped central heating. We are planning to have a new kitchen installed shortly. Someone from a kitchen company called today and mentioned to my wife that it would probably be in our interests to have a new boiler as our current one is (a)...

Re: Probs Replacing Batten Lamp Holder

I've had further thoughts about this. It's likely that the wiring port on your batten lampholder that isn't connected to one of the lampholder pins is meant to be for an earth connection. If so then the 3 red wires MUST NOT be connected to it. A better way to connect the fitting would be to get a ju...

Re: Probs Replacing Batten Lamp Holder

Two of the three wiring ports in your new fitting should be connected to the two pins of the actual lamp holder that the bulb contact. The third one shouldn't be connected to anything. You need to establish which two ports go to the lamp holder and MAKE CERTAIN that the other one isn't connected to ...

Re: Grandee Combi Boiler

I suppose so. If it is the valve at fault, changing it would hopefully fix the problem, unless there's something else wrong as well. If it still doesn't work after that, it eliminates the valve as the sole cause. I'd then look towards the flow sensor. Then I guess you're into the realm of an electri...

Re: Grandee Combi Boiler

I take it from what you say that the boiler doesn't kick in if a hot tap is turned on. If that's the case, I guess the most likely cause might be a failed flow switch in the hot water taps' supply line from the boiler.

Re: thermostatic mixer shower

Don't know too much about thermostatic mixer showers. However I would imagine that, if the cold water supply to your current shower comes from the same cold water storage tank that feeds your hot water cylinder, you should have balanced flows of hot and cold at the shower head. If that is the case a...

To muckyvagrant,

For gas fire spares, eg coals and embers try The Spares Merchant. I found them simply by "googling" gas fire spares. In my limited experience they are an excellent Company who take pride in their customer service levels.

Re: Can I remove a sealed plug and reattach?

No reason at all Keith, except that it might invalidate the warranty on the machine. I did that with mine but I ran it through a couple of cycles first attached to an extension lead to make sure the dishwasher was working proplerly.

Re: BI tells me to install mains smoke detectors

When we had a loft conversion done abiut four years ago, we had to have linked mains smoke detectors installed, one on each of the three floors in the house, despite the fact that we already had battery operated ones on the ground and first floors.
