Final Update. Thank you again for all your helpful input Atticus Finch. The engineer who came took measurements of our mains water flow and pressure. He said he was confident that we wouldn't have any flow problems were we to go for a combi boiler, especially since there are only the two of us left ...

Hi John.

I'm trying to get a picture in my mind of your set-up. It strikes me that a bottle trap might be your answer. You could angle the horizontal outlet from it diagonally towards the outlet pipe then connect them using two short lengths of 32 mm waste pipe and a compression elbow.

Have you checked arund the edges of the shower outlet for a build up of limescale or other debris. Might be worth giving it a quick clean with wire wool or wet & dry paper.

I've had further thoughts about this. It's likely that the wiring port on your batten lampholder that isn't connected to one of the lampholder pins is meant to be for an earth connection. Two of the three wiring ports in your new fitting should be connected to the two pins of the actual lamp holder that the bulb contact. The third one shouldn't be connected to anything. You need to establish which two ports go to the lamp holder and MAKE CERTAIN that the other one isn't connected to ...

I take it from what you say that the boiler doesn't kick in if a hot tap is turned on. If that's the case, I guess the most likely cause might be a failed flow switch in the hot water taps' supply line from the boiler.

For gas fire spares, eg coals and embers try The Spares Merchant. I found them simply by "googling" gas fire spares. In my limited experience they are an excellent Company who take pride in their customer service levels.

No reason at all Keith, except that it might invalidate the warranty on the machine. I did that with mine but I ran it through a couple of cycles first attached to an extension lead to make sure the dishwasher was working proplerly.

When we had a loft conversion done abiut four years ago, we had to have linked mains smoke detectors installed, one on each of the three floors in the house, despite the fact that we already had battery operated ones on the ground and first floors.
