Is there any way I can add a second light given that there is no neutral to connect to behind the light fitting? Thanks
Yes. You need to lift the floor above to get access to the lighting circuit, and in a convenient place (which should remain accessible for inspec...

Is this a fixed outside socket?

If so, it should be done properly, with proper fixed wiring and fixed connections, not a plug and flex...

They must be properly connected together using a bit of choc-block, not just twisted. Even if the wall-light doesn't need an earth, a different one in the future might, and if the back-box for the switch is metal, or the switch itself is, then this needs an earth as well.

What were they connected to before, i.e. on the old wall light? Did you mark the cables before you removed them, so that you know which ones went to which terminals on the old switches?

Do you have a multimeter?

Don't want to depress you, but if the answer to both of those is "no" then you'll probably need to call an electrician.... :?

Howie - when you submitted your original notification about the extension to BC, what did you tell them you would be doing to comply with Part P of the Building Regulations? You are right that the fee you pay them is supposed to cover the electrics as well, but if you didn't tell them that a non-reg...
