Re: Advice on Building Shelf for Fish Tank

Hi guys I am planning to build a shelf to support my fish tank. The tank weighs 150kg approx in the room I have a chimney breast so the shelf would go into that space like an arch. I want to attach it to 3 walls and make it out of wood. All 3 walls are solid so I was going to use three 2 x 1 batons...

Re: Fitting Rail and Clamp-Less Glass Balustrade - Help Needed

Thanks for the reply. The first picture is where I want to fit the channel. Just where it is on the picture. I assume that the grey is the channel you are talking about. The channel has been pre drilled for M12 bolts. [/quote Got that When I put the channel in that position, it sits on top of the t...

Re: Fitting Rail and Clamp-Less Glass Balustrade - Help Needed

I don't understand the question from the information given and the pictures.

It is very probable that you can do what you want to do but without a clearer understanding of what that is I can't give advice.

You obviously know the situation but need to explain in more detail with overview pictures.

Re: Putting Heavy Wooden Bed on Castors

Thanks for that tip. Btw, as a spin-off I've learned what a Birmingham screwdriver is and what SWMBO means! Happy to encourage learning. FWIW I have a complete set of the Birmingham screwdrivers, from a Japanese 100g one all the way up to a 2.5kg one. Sometimes they are the perfect tool. But as to ...

Re: Putting Heavy Wooden Bed on Castors

Thanks very much for taking the time to send such an informative reply. I also posted on another forum where someone suggested using Teflon furniture glides, which, he said, allow easier movement than castors, so I'm going to check those out. If they will be any good will depend on the surface you ...

Re: Putting Heavy Wooden Bed on Castors

I have an old wooden bed which is not easy to move (fairly heavy), so I want to put castors on it. The feet of the two headboard legs are rectangular and measure 45mm x 33mm. The feet of the footboard legs are circular and are 45mm diameter. I was thinking of putting castors on which have a metal s...

Re: Grub Screws in Door Handles Keep Coming Loose

Hi, The grub screws in my door handles keep working loose. Which is the best type of grub screw to use? Is the cone point supposed to hold better than the dog point or cup point? Thanks, Harry I wouldn't use a grub screw (slot head) instead use a Socket Setscrew (Allen key) and a Knurled Cup point ...

Re: What Type of Wood to Repanel Garage Door

For the plywood you will do best with marine grade as it will be more moisture resistant. For the moulding and other wood that will go on top the best, but probably not available is sweet chestnut that will last really well. Otherwise western red cedar and most tropical hardwood like Ipe. You must b...

Re: Replacing a uPVC Front Door With Composite and Removing Internal Frame

Thanks, that's really helpful! Incidentally, you said the frame needs a little TLC which I was hoping to do something about as it got damaged during redecorating and on the right there is a crack in it caused by the carpenter when he was building a new meter cupboard - would you be able to recommen...

Re: Replacing a uPVC Front Door With Composite and Removing Internal Frame

Why do you want to replace the door frame? Although it looks in need of a little TLC it doesn't look to be in bad structural condition. You may be able to just replace the door itself. Hi - thanks very much for replying to this! Ideally we'd like not to change the frame, but was assuming it'd be ne...

Re: Kitchen / Dishwasher Within Base Unit and Hinges Won't Fit

Sorry, it’s not sticking out, it’s the lack of space to the side for hinges If it isn't sticking out then there is plenty of space. To hang the door to the cabinet on the left hand side if you must use euro hinges, not ideal but the only option to match the doors under. There is no hinge that you c...
