Re: High Installation Costs for Dekko Infinity Double Glazing?

Windowwizard, Thanks for the reply. As I mentioned in my first post I had found another installer to get a quote from (had to ring up Dekko themselves to get an address for an alternate local installer, for some reason Google had not picked them up - well, probably because they didn't mention Dekko ...

Re: Fix Small Patches of Crumbling Redering

I've just looked up the Everbuild filler and it says it is suitable for exterior render patching. In any case, given that you only need to fill a few square feet of render that's fallen off to the depth of 1/4", I wonder why you mention hiring a cement mixer? You can mix up a bucket of mortar e...

PS: That last crack in the Artexed ceiling looks a little like someone stood on that area whilst in the loft!

Re: Are These Cracks Anything To Worry About in end of Terrace Property?

I have a 1930s house built on clay soil and it has worse cracks than that. The worst was about 6mm wide in places. Outside cracks tend to end up at the corner of a window somewhere as windows concentrate the stress. Inside I get similar small ceiling cracks. They are either along the interface of th...

Re: Bathroom Cold Tap Water and Very Low Supply

So are you saying your cold supply is from a tank in the loft too? Logically, if so and the tank is full of water, and you can see the exit of the cold water pipe in the tank is clear, then you have a blockage in the pipe from the tank to your bathroom. Something fell in the tank and is stuck in you...

Re: Untreated Wooden Gate Swelling in the Wet and Jamming

Funnily enough, I just hung a garden gate, painted it with Sadolin (two coats - Teak colour) and it too has swollen a little and needs easing. Here's the thing - although my gate was untreated also, I don't think that Tanalising stops water swelling wood. Tanalising is an anti-rot treatment, not a p...

Re: Help With Kitchen Tile Choosing and Paint Colours

To be honest, colours and decor are a personal matter. I mean, there are some things you ought not to do but many more you can get away with. Take that decal on the back wall - nice sentiments obviously but not to everyone's taste - that sort of motto in my opinion ought to go in a picture frame. I ...

Re: Opinions on Installing Toilet in Understairs Cupboards That's in Kitchen

I don't believe you're allowed to have a toilet whose door opens into a kitchen. Regulations. Don't take that as 100% certain but I seem to recall coming across this sort of question myself when thinking of converting an outside loo and outhouse (just outside the kitchen) to be an extension with the...

Re: Brick Wall Soundproofing for Common Wall Between Properties

PS: It occurs to me that the sort of metal brackets used to hang kitchen units on walls might be suitable. They are low profile, and if you got a sheet of rubber you could cut it into little rectangles, glue it onto the bracket and then there will be a similar bracket on the back of the drywall, onl...

Re: Brick Wall Soundproofing for Common Wall Between Properties

I wouldn't use cork. I know what you're thinking, but I don't think it absorbs sound well enough. Something like heavy old carpet in the gap beween the wall might be better if you're trying to keep the cost down. As for siliconing a panel to a wall, I think you'd have to apply quite a lot to be sure...

Re: Sealing Shower Door Base to Plate

I would have said...silicone. What is wrong with applying masking tape to the area to mask off the areas you don't want to get silicone on, then apply a bead to the gap. It doesn't need to go in the gap, just seal it over.

Don't apply too much, then smooth off with a wet finger...

Re: What is Best Wall Covering in a Shower Room

I think the idea of using marine ply etc is that in case your shower isn't waterproof, at least at some point in the future, you won't get rapid deterioration in whatever is behind the shower. I've also seen people painting ply/marine ply with pva - as a waterproofing coat. Exterior pva though (even...

Re: Bathroom Bond or Board Help for Bathroom Refurb

I don't know that this is what you mean but I've used tile-backer board - it's cementitious particle board, waterproof. It goes onto wooden studs. You don't have to drill holes in it, just drive the special drywall-type screws through it and into the studs. So, I'm not sure how you were thinking of ...

Re: Shower Draining Very Slowly and Water From Sink Coming up Through Plughole

Well, I have a shower without a pedestal - the waste pipe actually goes under the floorboards, so the arrangement is a little different to yours but essentially the same apart from that I would think. If I pull on the chrome top to the waste hole in the corner of the shower it pulls out (after a bit...

Re: Advice About Brick Work on Bay Wall

I have to wonder what happened to all the original mortar? Where's it all gone?! First of all, repointing would of course be better than what you have there. However, it would be next to impossible to get a decent amount of mortar in there and do a satisfactory job. Some of the bricks look as though...
