The problem is with the lintel not the tree root, the bearing is not enough and it has contracted causing the cracking.
Its best to remove the lintel and replace it with a concrete one, You will need 150mm minimum bearing on each side of the opening

yes you can use a pressed engineering brick, with the concrete top though you will need to tile it as concrete is porous and your wood/charcoal will get mouldy and wet

from the pictures weep holes have been left in the wall to allow water to seep out of the wall if water penetrates the coping slabs on the top of the wall, this could cause the wall to discolour after time, As for damp it looks unlikely
