Shed base, overhang, bearers

Post by ohdearme » Mon Aug 24, 2020 11:39 am

Looking at garden shed diagrams, I cannot quite see the details, perhaps you can help to clarify please.

Constructing a garden shed, concrete base is down and about to start the timber frame (floor).

Does the floor just overhang the bearers underneath by a fraction, or should the dimensions be the same? Does it matter?

What about the walls, should they overhang the four sides of the floor or again, be the same as the floor dimensions please?

I was looking at sheds at the local b&Q and it seems that the OSB is on the top and bottom of the frame. Am I right, if so it would "seal" the
frame?

With your help so far, I am getting there, thank you.

Hi ohdearme
From your description you are fitting additional bearers to the ones which come with the floor.
It is worth making the additional ones the same length as the shed floor and then fitting a skirt at the bottom of the sides to protect all bearers. Leave the skirt with a gap to your concrete base for ventilation but fit a wire mesh to keep rodents out.

Actually Stoneyboy I am making the whole thing, so there are no existing bearers. To clarify, the floor sits on the bearers with no overhang, but "skirt"? Does that mean wrap the dpc around the bearers somehow? Please explain and thanks for your help.

Hi ohdearme
Whatever you are going to use to clad the shed should be taken down over the bearers.
