I am new to this forum and I am completely new to any kind of DIY so apologies in advance for any ignorance on my part.

We have a downstairs loo that has a very strong smell of urine despite there being no signs of a leak. I live in a house with my husband and 2 young sons so spillages are common but despite having bleached everywhere thoroughly, the smell persists.

My husband is not at all practical but seeing as we are not really in a position to afford any professional help, I would like to have a go at trying to solve the problem myself.

Would anyone be willing to offer me some guidance?

As a plumber, I seem to spend half my working life with my head next to a toilet. If there are men or boys in the house, I guarantee there will be poor aiming involved and it is not due to a leak. Leaks generally do not smell of urine.

The problem usually is between the toilet pan and the floor. Any spillage tends to seep either under the pan or if you have cushion floor, between the underside of that that and the floor. Peel back the covering and my guess is you will find it is trapped between the two surfaces.
