Smoke detectors-interlinked?

by Sparkydelux » Tue Jan 08, 2008 10:27 pm

Hi,

Smoke alarms: Do they require to be connected on their own circuit or can they be taken off a JB with perm. feed?

I am also told they have to be interconnected?is this per Part P regs?

I have already got the power feeds in but no interlink to other smokes. I am now looking into RF smoke detectors if the interlink is required. Are RF detectors approved as part of a system?

Looking for guidance.

Regards.

From the iee quide to building regs, for single dwellings new or refurbished of Not more than two storeys.

Mains operated smoke alarms must be fitted.
Must be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions,
generally on ceilings and at least 300mm from any wall or ceiling luminaire

1, At least one on each floor

2, within 7m of kitchens and living rooms or other areas where fires may start e.g. integral garages

3, within 3m of all bedroom doors

The alarms are required to :

- be interconnected so that detection of smoke by one unit operates the alarm in all units,

- be permanently wired to a seperate way in the dist board or supplied from a local,regularly-used lighting circuit

- have battery back up

They should preferably be not rcd protected, but if required for electrical safety it should be -
- a single rcd serving no other circuit;or
- the rcd should operate independently of any rcd protection for circuits supplying socket-outlets or portable equipment.
