Some Advise Needed on Hip Roof and Calculating Run Information, help and tips on many areas of roofing including trusses, tiling, venting, insulation etc....

Evening all.

I'm planning on building a front porch and I'm going for a hip roof construction.

I've pitched quite a few roofs but not many hipped ones.

I know how to calculate rafter lengths and cut birdmouths etc but getting confused on which way to calculate my "run"

My span from outside of wall plate is as follows.

1200mm depth and going across 2300mm

My question is do I calculate my run from front wall plate to the house or calculate from left to right, hope this makes sence.

I think one way I'll end up with a small ridge and the other span I won't?

Any help on the right way to do this will be great!
