Squeaky floor

by peter2305 » Sat Apr 12, 2008 3:27 pm

We have a very squeaky landing floor. The house was built around 18 years ago and the flooring is chipboarding. I have read elsewhere that brushing some talcum or chalk powder between the board edges ought to help; I have tried this but they seem to be very close/tight and the powder has nowhere to go.

I would like to try screwing the boards down to the joists here and there, but the problem is finding exactly where the joists are. Is there a standard spacing distance between joists? I have tried drilling tiny test holes to find the joists; I realise I have to be careful about underfloor wiring and pipes.

Anyone got any other ideas? Thank you.
