Stripping Wallpaper from plasterboard

by ecrum14 » Fri May 02, 2008 11:46 am

i'm trying to strip wallpaper from walls which have NO plaster underneath. i.e. the wallpaper was applied directly to the plasterboard. its near impossible. anyone ever seen this before, any one any ideas to make it a bit easier? water and steamers have little to no affect as the wallpaper is bonded to the paper cover on the plasterboard.

Oh dear. No easy solution I'm afraid.

Try peeling the top layer of paper off then wet the backing paper. Don't use a very sharp scraper or you'll damage the surface of the board as you've probably already found out.

Steamer won't work as it'll just make the upper surface of the plasterboard soggy as well.

Once you have it all off then you have to use filler to level the inevitable gouges etc in the plasterboard surface. Sand that flat then apply a heavy grade (1200 or even 1400) lining paper which you can then redecorate by painting or papering over.

Cheers
