Table Top Extension Advice On What to use

by tryharder » Wed Dec 05, 2018 6:23 pm

I am planning to build a cover for my dining table which will extend it 6 inches at each end and 6 inches at each side (so taking a 6 ft by 3 ft table to a 7ft by 4ft table - sitting 12 instead of 8).
I intend to use two 3 1/2 foot sections (to make transport of top easier) and support these section with two 7 ft lengths of timber (2 inch by 1 inch) which will also hold the top in place by being fitted either side of table top. These strips would be bolted on to allow repeated set up and removal.
I had originally thought of using 18mm thick plywood sheet but in shop today I realised how heavy this would be.
Would 12mm thick sheet be enough for my purposes considering bulk of weight will be supported by table top with the additional 7ft lengths on each side and bearing in mind that the overhang is only 6 inches in each direction?
Thanks.
